I am working on a poem about Dedalus and Minotaur and the words that bind us.

This blog is about a can that fell one night when I was in Chapel Hill. I was there on visit. Three years before it would not have been a visit, it would have been a typical day. I left Chapel Hill after receiving my MA. I went to my old alma mater in order to visit some friends. As I walked thorugh the town, there was this strange feeling growing inside me. I think it was because I felt disconnected from the town where I had spent 6 years of my life. I tried slipping into my old routine. I visited my regular coffee shops and ate at the same places I used to eat. I went to the stores where I used to shop at and bought the same items I typically bought but nothing came back. No matter what I did, there was no path back to my old self. I felt the day fade away as I grasped to reconnect to my past, a futile attempt to understand how I had gotten to this point in my life. Then the can fell.

I heard it first. It was a strange clanging sound, like a distant, antique snare. My eyes shot to where I thought the sound came from, and there on the red bricks was a crushed budweiser beer can. I looked up at the windows of the only dormitory near the can and saw one opened window. I envisioned the can arcing through the air. My mind drew the descending parabola as gravity had its way with the can's flight. I pictured some drunk freshman having a really bad day. Maybe he (and I say "he" because for some reason I don't believe that women drink budweiser) failed an exam or maybe his girlfriend left him. I try to pry into the impetus behind his act. I walk on and my brain fizzles as I walk past the can and the open window and continue making my way into the dark.
